What is Manual Backtesting?
Manual backtesting (also called chart replay or bars replay) lets you replay historical price data on a chart and place trades by hand, as if you were trading live. The chart moves forward in time — you decide when to buy and sell based on what you see.
Unlike code-based or automated backtesting, manual replay requires no programming. You visually analyze the chart, apply your trading rules, and execute trades using on-screen buttons. This makes it ideal for discretionary traders, price action traders, and anyone learning to trade.
Key things to look for in a replay tool: data quality (tick vs OHLC), replay speed range, rewind capability, spread simulation, and whether you need to pay or install software.
