TradingView Bars Replay — Chart Replay on the World’s Largest Platform
TradingView’s built-in Bar Replay lets you replay historical price action on any chart, across virtually every instrument — stocks, forex, crypto, futures, indices. With 50M+ users, it’s the most widely accessible replay tool.
The catch: the free tier only replays completed OHLC bars (no intrabar movement). Tick-level data requires Ultimate (~$100/month) and is limited to the last 7 days of history. And there’s no rewind — you can only move forward.
Pricing & Data Tiers
| Plan | Price | Replay Data Quality |
|---|---|---|
| Basic (Free) | $0 | OHLC bars only — each bar appears complete instantly |
| Essential | ~$15/mo | Simulated intrabar on daily+ timeframes |
| Plus | ~$30/mo | Simulated intrabar on all timeframes including intraday |
| Premium | ~$60/mo | Simulated intrabar on all timeframes |
| Ultimate | ~$100/mo | Real tick data (last 7 days of history only) |
TradingView runs frequent sales (up to 60% off annual plans). Check tradingview.com/pricing for current offers.
Important distinction: “simulated intrabar” on Essential/Plus/Premium uses an algorithm to approximate how price moved within a bar. It’s not actual tick data — it’s interpolation. Only Ultimate gives real ticks, and only for the last 7 days of history.
How Replay Works
- Open any chart on TradingView
- Click the Replay button in the toolbar
- Click on the chart to set your start date
- Press play — bars form forward in time
- Adjust speed using the speed slider
- Step forward bar-by-bar with the skip button
You can place trades during replay using the built-in buy/sell buttons in the replay widget, or via TradingView’s Paper Trading mode — market, limit, and stop orders with P&L tracking on the chart.
Key Strengths
Massive Instrument Coverage
TradingView covers virtually every tradeable instrument — 50+ stock exchanges, all forex pairs, 100+ crypto coins, futures (CME, NYMEX, COMEX, Eurex), ETFs, bonds. No other replay tool comes close on breadth. Some exchanges require additional data subscriptions ($2-5/month each).
Pine Script During Replay
All 100,000+ community indicators and 100+ built-in indicators work during replay. Custom Pine Script indicators work too. This is a huge advantage if your strategy relies on specific indicators — you can see them calculate in real-time as bars form.
Familiar Interface
If you already use TradingView for charting, replay is just a button click away. No new software to learn. Multiple chart layouts on paid plans let you watch several timeframes during replay.
Key Limitations
No Rewind
This is the biggest drawback. If you miss a setup or want to re-examine price action, you must restart replay from a new point. During a long backtesting session, this wastes significant time.
Free Tier Is Very Limited
On the free plan, replay shows each bar appearing complete — there’s no intrabar price movement at all. A 5-minute bar just appears fully formed. You can’t see how price moved within the bar, which is essential for evaluating entries and exits.
Basic Trading, No Dedicated Backtesting Panel
TradingView has buy/sell buttons built into the replay widget for quick trades. However, the order panel is designed for live/paper trading, not backtesting. There’s no dedicated lot sizing, SL/TP preset buttons, or trade journaling built into the replay experience. You must manually track your results.
No Spread Simulation
TradingView shows mid-price only during replay. There’s no bid/ask spread visualization. For forex and CFD traders where spreads significantly affect profitability, this is a meaningful gap.
Limited Speed
Replay speed is adjustable via a speed slider. For scanning through weeks of data, it can feel slow. StrategyTune goes up to 50,000x.
Can’t Save/Resume Sessions
Replay sessions can’t be saved and continued later. If you close the browser or navigate away, you start over.
